A monthly DigitalOcean bill split into Droplets, backups, storage, load balancers, databases and transfer over your team's pool, for Droplets that run all month.
What does a small app cost on DigitalOcean? (prices checked 2026-11-04)
Two 4 GiB Basic Droplets are $48 a month. Weekly backups on both add 20% ($9.60), one load balancer node is $12, the smallest managed database is $15 and a 100 GiB volume is $10. If the team sends 9,000 GiB out against its 8,000 GiB pool, the extra 1,000 GiB is $10 at $0.01 each. The month comes to $104.60.

Prices from digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets and DigitalOcean's pricing docs, checked 2026-11-04. Basic Droplets bill per second and stop at 672 hours a month, so a Droplet that exists all month costs its monthly price; powered-off Droplets still bill. Backups 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet price; snapshots $0.06 per GiB a month; volumes $0.10 per GiB a month, attached or not; HTTP load balancers $12 per node; managed databases from $15; reserved IPv4 free when assigned, $5 a month when not. Transfer allowances are pooled across the team; extra outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB and inbound is free.
Why the bill drifts up
The Droplet price is fixed and easy to read. What grows is everything around it. Backups are a percentage, so resizing a Droplet raises its backup line too, and daily backups on a staging box are money nobody decided to spend. Volumes bill every hour they exist, so a volume left behind after its Droplet was destroyed keeps costing $0.10 per GiB. A Droplet that was powered off to save money saves nothing, because the hypervisor keeps its resources reserved.
Transfer is the opposite story. Every Droplet adds its allowance to one pool for the team, so a few small Droplets usually cover a lot of traffic, and going over costs $0.01 per GiB. If this number is big on your bill, something unusual is sending data out.
The DigitalOcean pricing guide explains the 672-hour cap and the newer v5 Droplets, and the Hetzner vs AWS calculator prices a similar server elsewhere. If your DigitalOcean bill looks bigger than this page, the free cloud cost audit is $0 and a person will tell you which lines to cut.
