R2 prices from developers.cloudflare.com/r2/pricing (updated 2026-10-01), checked 2026-10-24. S3 prices from aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing: $0.023 per GB stored, $0.005 per 1,000 writes, $0.0004 per 1,000 reads, the first 100 GB out free each month (across your AWS account), then $0.09 per GB to 10 TB and less above. Deletes are free on R2. For Infrequent Access, data read back is counted as the data downloaded.
Why the egress line decides it
Storage on R2 is about a third cheaper than S3 Standard, and writes and reads are around 10% cheaper. That alone is a nice saving on a big bucket and close to nothing on a small one. The line that changes everything is data downloaded to the internet: S3 charges $0.09 per GB after the first 100 GB a month, R2 charges nothing. A bucket that serves images, video or downloads straight to users can cost several times more on S3 than on R2, and the calculator shows it as soon as you raise the download number.
Two cases where R2 is not the answer. Backups you almost never read are cheaper in S3 Glacier Deep Archive, at $0.00099 per GB. And an S3 bucket that already sits behind CloudFront pays nothing for transfer from S3 to CloudFront, with CloudFront's first 1 TB out free each month, so price the CloudFront side before moving anything.
If you do move, Cloudflare's Super Slurper and Sippy copy the data for free on the R2 side, but AWS still bills the transfer out of S3 unless it approves a free move-out request through Support. Our R2 pricing post has the details.
